Plan the room before choosing the game
Decide whether pupils will each submit answers or discuss one activity on the board. One screen lets you control the pace. Separate devices add joining and connection checks.
Test the activity on your classroom computer and check its display from the back. Keep a paper question ready. Our teacher guidance can help you plan short game sessions, while the exam board map helps match a topic to your course.
Kahoot
Best for: a live quiz where the whole class answers a teacher's question set. Kahoot's UK free Go plan admits up to 40 players in a live game. Count participants before choosing the plan.
The platform has a large community library and tools for your own questions. Preparation includes reviewing a borrowed quiz or writing one, then arranging the pupil devices you intend to use.
Pupils need no account just to play, according to the privacy notice, which also excludes third-party advertising. After play, discuss answers. With only the board, lead a discussion and collect responses on paper.
Choose this if you have devices ready and want a prepared live quiz.
Gimkit
Best for: a lesson slot with room for a game-show quiz built around your kit. Gimkit uses teacher-made question sets, so check the science content before introducing the game. Plan the explanation of play as well as the questions.
The free Basic account supports any number of pupils in featured modes. Pick a featured mode; assignments need Pro. Pupils can join live games with a game code and no account, but need accounts for classes or extras such as cosmetics.
Test joining on pupil equipment before scheduling a short starter.
Choose this if your class has a prepared kit and enough lesson time to learn the game format.
Wayground
Best for: question sessions where you want a choice between live delivery and pupils working at their own pace. Wayground has a free Basic plan with assessments and presentations, although question types have limits.
Pupils can enter games without creating accounts. For cover on devices, provide the activity link and a written finishing question. Set a task for early finishers.
The shared science library mainly follows US courses. Your preparation includes checking vocabulary and removing questions outside the lesson's scope. Confirm your session capacity in the account before setting work for several classes together.
Choose this if you need a prepared assessment for live teaching or independent work during cover.
Wordwall
Best for: putting a short activity on the board and discussing answers as a class. Wordwall's activity templates include matching tasks, quizzes and wheels. You can also make printable activities, which gives you another way to use the lesson content.
Basic is free for three activities and 12 templates. Write questions about common mistakes and preview the board display. Ask all pupils to record a choice before inviting one pupil to suggest an answer. Hear their reasoning before accepting a match.
Pupils do not need accounts to play. For individual play, check the activity suits your class size.
Choose this if one screen and a short teacher-made activity fit your starter or end-of-lesson review.
BBC Bitesize Atomic Labs
Best for: a KS3 board discussion about a virtual science investigation. Atomic Labs supplies experiments across the three sciences and is free to play without signing in.
Use it when an investigation would serve your lesson better than a scored recall round. Bookmark the part the covering teacher will show. With the game on the board, you can operate the controls while pupils record predictions and observations on paper. This routine uses one shared screen.
Choose this if a KS3 investigation gives the class something useful to predict and discuss.
Crazy Science Games
Best for: a prepared science round when you want to avoid writing a question set. The 46 short games span KS3 and GCSE biology, chemistry and physics, with free access and no login, adverts or tracking cookies.
Choose a no-timer round of ten for thinking time on the board. Class teams mode and a harder start are available. Open your chosen game before pupils arrive.
For topic choices, consider Circuit Builder or Cell Builder. Browse other topics in the collection. Kahoot and Wayground fit better when you need a quiz made from your own lesson questions.
Choose this if a ready-made skill round matches today's lesson and you want a quick start.
Three lesson patterns to adapt
Starter: open Solid, Liquid, Gas on the board in a no-timer round. Ask pupils to write a choice before teams agree their answer. Discuss one disagreement, then return to the lesson question.
End-of-lesson review: prepare a small Wordwall matching task using terms pupils confused during the lesson. Run it on the board, collect individual choices on paper and ask pupils to explain one correction before leaving.
Cover lesson: select a Wayground activity beforehand and check it on school devices. Give the covering teacher access instructions and a paper follow-up question. Ask pupils to hand in the written explanation so the next teacher can review their understanding.
Which science games work with only a classroom board?
For one-screen teaching, consider a Wordwall activity, a Crazy Science Games round or a KS3 Atomic Labs investigation. The teacher can operate the screen while pupils write answers or discuss predictions. Preview the display from the back of the room. Decide how you will collect each pupil's thinking before accepting a class answer.
How many pupils can join a free live Kahoot game?
Kahoot Go allows up to 40 participants in a live game in the UK pricing table checked for this guide. Gimkit Basic supports any number of pupils in its featured modes. Check the exact activity and account capacity for other platforms before a large session, especially if several classes will join together.
How can teachers keep game set-up short?
Pick the science objective and open the exact activity before the lesson. For quiz builders, finish writing or checking the questions in advance. Test pupil access if you want separate devices. For a board session, prepare paper responses and a written follow-up so the activity can start with a clear instruction.
